Georgia O'Keeffe: Visions of Hawaii
New York Botanical Garden
To October 28, 2018
"O’Keeffe was astonished by the beauty of Hawaii."
"Finding out Georgia O’Keeffe had a Hawaiian period is kind of like finding out Brian Wilson had a desert period. But here it is: “Georgia O’Keeffe: Visions of Hawaiʻi,” 17 eye-popping paradisal paintings, produced in a nine-week visit in 1939, and now on display at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx, through October 28. It is the first time the largely unknown group has been shown together since its original exhibition in 1940 at Alfred Stieglitz’s gallery, An American Place, in New York. In addition, there are two oil sketches never before exhibited. And not a bleached skull in sight..." [read more in the New York Times].
"Her advertising work — the original impetus for the trip — is only a minimal part of the exhibition and consists of two paintings. O’Keeffe initially presented the N.W. Ayer & Son with a painting of Heliconia (or crab’s claw ginger) and one of a Papaya tree. The agency rejected the latter, as it unwittingly turned out to be the signature fruit of the client’s competitors. She subsequently completed another painting, the more on-brand “Pineapple Bud,” which she allegedly worked on only upon her return to New York... O’Keeffe’s trip to Hawai’i proved to have a palpable impact on her career... she started developing visual forms and devices that would become fixtures of her subsequent paintings: think of vortex-like motifs, oculi, and visions of the great beyond..." "The show details O’Keeffe’s journey, with a map tracing her arrival on the SS Lurline and subsequent island-hopping, a copy of the guidebook she carried, and a set of “Flowers of Hawaii” postcards that she purchased during her stay. There are also excerpts from the missives O’Keeffe sent to Stieglitz back in New York—as much love letters to Hawaii as to her husband—and travel snapshots taken by the artist herself..." "O’Keeffe became excited about Maui’s rocky lava formations careening into the sea. She thrilled at the black sand beaches and the lush ‘lao valley. This she painted in a few iterations. Typically for O’Keeffe, she applied her modernistic style to represent how the incredible natural visions she saw touched her emotionally. On her excursions, she soaked up the forms, textures, symmetries, and plant structures. She gleaned as much as time, interest, and inspiration allowed her..." [read more on Blogcritics].
